In no particular order, we've provided the pros and cons of 5 apps worth checking out. Some are simply for browsing, while others have built-in features like sharing your location on social media or walking routes. 

The basic versions of all of them are free, although many of them offer premium features for a monthly or yearly fee.

mapquest

This application provides one of the original navigation services in desktop form and also exists in application form.

PROS:

  • The focus is mainly on maps and driving directions, although it also offers turn-by-turn navigation and traffic information.
  • Offers multiple routes to choose from based on what you prefer
  • It can tell you where to find the best gas prices.
  • Allows you to search and book hotels and restaurants within the app.

CONS:

  • Pop-up ads turn off some users.
  • Map size may be too small to see details
  • The mobile version may give inaccurate directions.
  • Not available offline.

This app is available for download at iOS or android.

Scout GPS Link

Scout GPS Link calls itself the “only social navigation app”.

PROS:

  • It has normal features including turn-by-turn navigation, real-time traffic information, and speed updates.
  • Offers social features such as nearby restaurants recommended by users.
  • It can send text messages to people automatically to let them know your estimated time of arrival.

CONS:

  • The basic version is free.
  • The app only works in the US at the moment.
  • It may decrease your phone's battery life due to the app running in the background.
  • Some users have noted security and privacy concerns due to location sharing.

osmand

Application focused on maps using data from OpenStreetMap. See what's good and bad about this app.

PROS:

  • It works online or offline.
  • You can upload a GPX file and use it as a route.
  • It features voice guidance, lane guidance, HEC and even cycling routes.
  • It has a plugin for ski resort routes in some countries.

CONS:

  • Some users complained about a bad interface and the difficulty in finding functions in the application.
  • Address lookup function needs improvement.

TomTom Go Navigation

TomTom Go Navigation, the very popular mobile app among GPS device makers.

PROS:

  • It features live traffic information, voice navigation, offline functions and 3D maps.
  • It has speed camera warnings where it is allowed.
  • Includes maps for other countries in case you're traveling internationally.
  • Allows you to share your estimated time of arrival with family and friends.

CONS:

  • Free, but only for a trial period. 
  • Users have reported that the search function needs improvement, can load slowly, and sometimes gives strange directions.

GPS Gaia

Finally, with GPS Gaia you explore back roads and download walking routes, this app excels in offline navigation.

PROS:

  • Provides topographic and road maps.
  • You can share maps and waypoints with others.
  • It offers features for outdoor activities like hiking, skiing, hunting, camping, mountaineering, and even firefighters and search and rescue teams.
  • It has offline capability.

CONS:

  • The free version has limited map selection and no offline capability. 
  • Focus on outdoor and offroad locations rather than driving routes.
